Refectory of the Main Administration Building Maastricht University

Location: Minderbroedersberg 4-6, 6211 LK Maastricht

Realisation: 2016

Commission: Maastricht University

Art project.

The building on the Minderbroedersberg which houses the main administration of Maastricht University dates back to 1699. Originally it was built as a monastery and church by the Order of Friars Minor. It has served more secular purposes as a prison and hall of justice.
I realized an artwork for the entrance to the refectory.

Design:
The design is distracted from the current artwork of windows and doors in the auditorium which I realized in 2008. It is an orange/red growing shape of branches that suggests to flow over in veins and arteries. The basis of this design is the image on the double doors in the auditorium, the same growing shape is shown in this design. Visitors who leave the auditorium through these doors have probably seen it and when they walk through the corridor to the refectory they see a similar autonomous artwork on the wall and doors at the end of the corridor.

Content:
The branches of the Bristlecone Pine tree, one of the longest living organisms on earth are the basis of this design. The veins and arteries refer to the Medical Faculty and branches to history, growth and development.

Dimensions:
4.75 x 2.80 m (H x W)

Technique:
The image is digitally printed on foil and afterwards laminated on wall and doors.
